What is Civic Engagement?

Civic engagement is the process of getting involved in your community and working to improve its social, economic, and political well-being. It involves everything from volunteering your time and resources to advocating for specific causes and policies.

Vallejo has a long history of civic engagement, with residents taking an active role in shaping the city's development and growth. From the creation of community gardens and public art installations to the establishment of business-watch programs and social justice initiatives, Vallejoans have shown time and again that they care deeply about their city and its future.

Why Should You Get Involved?

Getting involved in civic engagement is not only good for your community, it's good for you too. Studies have shown that people who are actively engaged in their communities are happier, healthier, and more fulfilled.

By getting involved in local initiatives and projects, you'll have the opportunity to meet new people, learn new skills, and make a real difference in your community. Whether you're interested in environmental sustainability, social justice, or economic development, there are numerous ways to get involved in Vallejo.

How Can You Get Involved?

If you want to make a difference in the community and get involved in civic engagement, there are several ways to do so. Within the next month, Vallejo.City will be adding resources to the site for you to take action.

In the meantime, here are a few suggestions:

  1. Become knowledgable about the City's General Plan!

  2. Know your district and know your district's representative!

  3. Attend City Council meetings: Held on the 2nd and 4th Tiesday of each month at 7:00PM. Learn about the issues and speak up about your concerns. The City Council is responsible for making decisions about the city's policies and budget. Attending these meetings can provide insight into the issues facing the city, and you can voice your concerns during public comment periods.

  4. Join a community organization: Vallejo has several community organizations focused on various issues, such as education, housing, and the environment. Joining one of these organizations can give you a chance to meet other people who share your interests and work together to make a difference. There are many local organizations in Vallejo that are dedicated to improving the community. Whether you're interested in arts, environmental sustainability, social justice, or economic development, there's an organization out there that's right for you. Some popular options include the Vallejo Arts Fund (VAF), Vallejo Citizen Air Monitoring Network (VCAMN), and the Vallejo Housing Justice Coalition (VHJC).

  5. Apply to be a Commissioner or Board/Committee Member: This is an opportunity to have your voice heard on key local issues, be able to serve the community, and a chance to learn more about the community and its leadership.

  6. Volunteer: There are numerous opportunities to volunteer in Vallejo, whether it's with a local charity, a community center, or a school. Volunteering is a great way to give back to the community and make a difference.

  7. Participate in neighborhood associations: Vallejo has many neighborhood associations that work to improve the quality of life in their respective areas. Joining a neighborhood association can provide a platform for you to connect with your neighbors, address common concerns, and impact change — like what the South Vallejo community is doing with the South Vallejo Grant Grocery Cooperative (SVG Grocery Coop).

  8. Run for office: If you're passionate about making a change in Vallejo, running for office could be a way to make a significant impact. Whether it's for a local school board or City Council seat, running for office can help bring attention to important issues and provide a platform for you to make a difference.

Overall, there are many ways to get involved. By attending meetings, joining organizations, volunteering, participating in neighborhood associations, and running for office, you can make a positive and powerful impact on your community.
